Description: The bulk of the collection represents the papers of James William Hook (1884-1957), president of the Geometric Tool Co., United Illuminating Company, and Acme Wire Co., civic leader affiliated with various commissions, boards, and organizations in New Haven and New England, and author and genealogist, Included are his correspondence, financial and business reports, photographs, clippings, manuscripts, and other materials relating to his activities and family affairs.
The collection also contains papers of and relating to descendants of Thomas Hook who settled in Maryland in 1668, including Capt. James Hook (d. 1802), of Greene County, PA, and Frederick County, MD, owner of considerable properties and military officer serving with 13th Virginia Regiment (1777-78) during the American Revolution; descendants of William Hooke, early settler of Kittery, ME, including Charles R. Hook, president of Armco Steel Corporation (formerly American Rolling Mill Company); and family members in Prince Georges County and Baltimore, MD, and other parts of the U.S. The Eller family series includes correspondence, notes, deeds, wills, genealogical materials, and other papers of the German American family of James W. Hook's mother, Virginia (Eller) Hook, residing in Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Related families series consists of genealogical materials and other papers of Allen, Bechtel, Clark, Dickens, Grant, Irons, McNeil, Smith, Vannoy, and many other families.
