Description: These papers reflect the professional and public life of Rollin Osterweis, historian and civic leader of New Haven. Aside from a few letters in the general correspondence and some family records, there is no personal or family history. The collection includes correspondence with publishers and others, drafts, galley proofs, notes and research background materials, and other papers, concerning his books, Three Centuries of New Haven (1953), Rebecca Gratz (1934), The New Haven Green and the American Bicentennial (1976), and others; teaching notes for classes taught at University of New Haven; manuscripts of shorter writings; lecture notes; papers pertaining to the history of Temple Mishkan Israel (New Haven and Hamden, CT) and Jews in New Haven; personal memorabilia; newspaper clippings and reviews; printed articles; awards and tributes; photos; obituaries, memorials, and letters of condolence; and personal copies of books and articles. Includes information reflecting his involvement with New Haven Preservation Trust, New Haven Bicentennial Committee, New Haven Colony Historical Society, Wooster Square Historic District Commission, Taft School (Watertown, CT), Connecticut Civil War Centennial Commission, Temple Mishkan Israel, Committee of the Proprietors of Common and Undivided Lands in New Haven, and other community organizations; and some correspondence, genealogical materials, and other papers of the Osterweis family.
