Description: The First New Haven School Society preceded the Board of Education, which was established in 1856. Its records include minutes, committee records, financial and business records, and records of the superintendent's cabinet and of Boardman School; together with records of First Newhaven School Society (1799-1856), First School District (1821-1855), and New Haven City School District (1857-1897), and of Westville School District and South School District of East Haven, both incorporated into the New Haven district (1921 and 1902 respectively).
